We are seeking applications from artists working with moving image to take part in a 4 month residency (May - Sep 2019). For details on what the artist will receive please see our ‘What we offer’ page.
Application Procedure
Portfolio
Max 10 works. Please include following details - title, date, medium, dimensions, short description (max 100 words per piece). For video works please provide an online link.
CV
We are not looking for extensive CVs, but just to see an indication of your exhibition and educational history.
Motivational letter Max 500 words. Please explain why you would like to take part in the residency, how it is relevant to your practice, and a brief project proposal if you have one in mind (this is not mandatory).
Reference
Please provide an email for one referee.

Timeline
Deadline - Monday 6th May at midnight.
Artist will be selected by Georgie Brinkman (Curator, The New Flesh), Benjamin Cook (Director, LUX), Peter Taylor (Director, BFMAF) and Jennet Thomas (Artist, Reader in Time Based Media and Performance) in the week commencing 6th May. The artist will be expected to begin their residency imminently after selection, around mid-May. They will work for four months until mid-September, and will have a solo presentation of their work at the end of September.

Please note
We particularly encourage applications from individuals underrepresented in education and exhibition history. We intend to select an artist in an early stage of their career, most likely without an MA qualification. That being said, if you do have an MA but can demonstrate that this opportunity would offer a significant advancement of your career (for example it would be your first solo presentation) please do apply.
We particularly encourage applications from BAME and LGBTQ+ communities that may wish to explore their identity in relation to costume.
FAQs
How many people will you select?We will only be selecting one artist for this opportunity, but shortlisted candidates will be invited to display a moving image work and a short interview on our website throughout the period.
Can I apply as a collective/duo?Yes, but please note that the fee and studio desk space will have to be shared.
Can I apply if I don’t live in London or the UK?Yes, but please note that unfortunately we cannot provide accommodation or travel expenses.
Can I apply if I’m a student?No, unfortunately we cannot accept applications from current students.
Do the works in my portfolio have to be solely moving image?No, we welcome applicants with diverse practices. It would be advisable to have at least one moving image work in your portfolio, and be able to demonstrate the relevance to costume in your work if you do not frequently work with moving image.
Do I have to have used costumes in my work before?No, we don’t expect costumes to necessarily have a prevelance in your work, but please demonstrate in the 500 word motivational letter the potential relevance to your practice.
Do I have to have any qualifications?No, we do not require you to have any formal training. We particularly encourage applications from individuals underrepresented in education.
Are there any age restrictions?
No, there is no upper or lower age limit.
What is expected of me during the residency?We expect the artist to create a new moving image work as a result of the residency. You will be expected to work on this project 3 days per week, with a working day 8 hours per day. The artist is able to structure their schedule as they wish.
