We are delighted to announce that we have selected Tanoa Sasraku-Ansah from 207 applicants as our next artist-in-residence (May - Sep 2019). Tanoa will be examining the historical presentation of Blackness in costume through characters such as Pierrot the clown, particularly ruminating on “ the role that all-black theatre companies played in “re-branding” the post-slavery, black human”. We were particularly impressed with how Tanoa’s research area will offer a critical assessment of the role of costume within wider society, and how that impacts on the understanding of identity.
Thank you to all of our applicants - we were spoilt for choice!

We’re back! After a short hiatus during 2017 Academy AiR has had a facelift and will now be operating as The New Flesh. We are currently reapplying for funding, and talking with institutions around the Southwark area to develop the residency into an even better opportunity for emerging video artists. Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming opportunities and news through our social media.

Sophie Rogers presents a new video installation created during her time as Artist-in-Residence at Academy Costumes, one of the UK's leading costumiers for screen and theatre. In her new work, "HWEEOO"; A Sweet New World, Sophie takes us on a journey through a sickly sweet, absurd land that is solely populated by herself and her twin. Using costumes taken from a stage version of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', her work reflects on a longing to escape from anxieties in our real world.
Curated by ZOOX.
Sound design by Alex Wight.
Movement direction by Regina Hofmanova.
Lyrics and vocals by Georgie Mason.
The exhibition will be open 7th - 9th April, 11am - 6pm.

Open call for a screening of work by emerging video artists to be shown at Platform on 05/03/17.
Academy AiR is an artist residency that commissions a video artist to make a new work using the costumes and facilities at Academy Costumes, one of the UK’s leading costumiers for film, TV and the performing arts. They receive a studio space and exhibition at Platform, a non-profit project space in Southwark, as well as curatorial and technical support from art collective ZOOX. Our current artist in residence is Sophie Rogers.
Alongside the residency, ZOOX are curating a series of evening events at Platform to help create an inclusive, ongoing community of emerging artists that can meet, discuss ideas, show work and act as a support network.
For our first open call event we will be curating a screening of videos that address themes associated with Academy AiR such as storytelling or character construction. We invite emerging artists to submit their work to be screened alongside a video by our artist in residence, Sophie Rogers. We are particularly interested in artists that utilise or make costumes within their practice.
Please note that the videos will be projected as part of a showreel, and so we request that they have a running time of no longer than approx. 15mins. Excerpts will be accepted.
Please send online links or files, along with a short description about the work to hello@zoox-collective.com by 24/02/17. Artists will be announced on 26/02/17 and will be required to send their finished video files to us by 01/03/17.
